    Lupita Nyong'o mourns loss of Black Panther co-star Connie Chiume, 72, with high praise

    Actress Lupita Nyong'o has shared a tribute to her Black Panther co-star Connie Chiume.

    Connie's family confirmed the star's death from a "medical procedure" on Tuesday afternoon at a hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa. She was 72 years old.

    Lupita posted a photo of Connie at the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever red carpet event on Instagram . The South African actress was smiling proudly wearing a traditional yellow dress and matching headpiece.

    "We have lost a library! May @conniechiume rest in peace and power," Lupita captioned her post. The 12 Years a Slave actress' comments section was filled with condolences for Connie.

    One wrote: "A life well lived. May she RIP." Another added: "RIP queen say Hello to Chadwick tell him we miss him dearly," referencing Chadwick Boseman - the star of Black Panther who tragically died at the age of 43 from colon cancer in 2020.

    Nongelo, Connie's son, shared the news of his mother's passing with Newzroom Afrika. He stated that the beloved actress was hospitalized for a "medical procedure" before she died.

    Besides starring as a Wakanda elder, Connie was known for appearing on South African television shows like Rhythm City, Zone 14, and Gomora. She also appeared in Beyonce's musical film Black is King.

    Connie's family also shared a statement on Instagram about the passing of the matriarch. "The Chiume Family regrets to inform you of the passing of the internationally acclaimed award-winning actress Connie Chiume. Connie Chiume, 72, passed on at Garden City Hospital today on 6 August 2024," it read, "The Family asks for privacy during this difficult period. The family will communicate further details."

    The South African government also posted a tribute to the country's actress. "Our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of multi-award winning and legendary actress Connie Chiume. Her outstanding work will always be remembered," they wrote.

    In 2022, Connie appeared on the MacG Podcast and spoke about her legacy. She said: "I have impacted each and every person in a different way. Whatever way I have impacted you, remember me that way."
