One individual was left baffled after they learned the unique name their friend planned to give to their child .

Taken aback, they had to double-check if the name was actually disease-related like they thought it was.

Taking to Reddit , they wrote: “I don't know what the motivation was for this baby name , and believe me I'm going to ask for the story when I see her next week.

“She named her baby boy Gehrig.

“As soon as I saw the birth announcement post and the name, I thought ‘like the baseball player and terminal illness?’

“Google confirmed the spelling. Yes, exactly like the baseball player and terminal illness.

“In my mind it's a tragedy (all the bullying that kid is gonna go through like ‘gay rig’) but I'm not sure if it's a bonafide tragedeigh because it doesn't have a unique spelling.

“When I looked up ‘Gehrig baby boy name and meaning,’ this gem was the first result: Gehrig Origin and Meaning The name Gehrig is a boy's name.

“Gehrig might have been used as a sports hero name honoring legendary baseball Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig, but the association with the disease he gave his name to makes it a no-no.

“Thankfully she gave the kid a very normal middle name so he has that to fall back on, but I'm curious to hear opinions on this one…”

Reddit users commented their thoughts on the interesting name.

One social media user wrote: “Nothing quite says ‘loved by my parents,’ like a name associated with illness. That is tragic.”

Another individual chimed in: “And not even a minor illness. An actually tragic, debilitating and painful disease.”

With their own perspective, someone else wrote: “My sister in law’s neighbor named her kid that. But he was named after the player, not the disease! Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis Is the real name of the disease anyway. I think it’s fine to name a kid after a famous guy who fought a terrible disease.”

And another person said: “I know someone who has a son named Gehrig. She’s a huge Yankees and baseball fan. I’m fairly certain she didn’t think about ALS when she named him.”
