Jim Harbaugh Receives 4-Year Penalty By NCAA

    2024-08-08

Jim Harbaugh has left his alma mater for the NFL after leading the Michigan Wolverines to a College Football Playoff National Championship win last season. Most fans and media would assume that the sign-stealing scandal investigation is closed. The person in charge of the scandal is no longer with the Michigan football program, just like Harbaugh.

Since over a year has passed, more allegations and information are hitting the sports world. Jim Harbaugh and the Michigan Wolverines had a perfect 15-0 record last season, beating Ohio State, Alabama in the Rose Bowl, and the Washington Huskies to take the crown. Now, the former Wolverines head coach has received a four-year penalty by the NCAA.

Jim Harbaugh Gets Four-Year Show Cause Order

According to On3Sports, Jim Harbaugh received a four-year show-cause order and a one-year ban from coaching any collegiate program if he was to return to the NCAA. This penalty involved five current or previous staff members who were under Harbaugh at Michigan. During the 2020 COVID dead period, Jim Harbaugh was accused of committing violations due to recruiting.

Jim Harbaugh failed to cooperate and follow the proper procedures, which resulted in "unethical conduct." This went from a Level II infraction, dropping to a Level I violation. Further suspension will prohibit Harbaugh from having any contact or team involvement including travel, practice, video study, recruiting, and team meetings in regards to the show-cause order that he has been issued.

Jim Harbaugh will have to prove that he did not violate the rules that were put in place by the NCAA. Initially, he never answered any questions or gave responses to the allegations that were brought to his attention either by the media or NCAA when asked to speak on those matters. Instead, he will be focusing on coaching the Los Angeles Chargers for the foreseeable future in hopes of winning a Super Bowl title, something that he did not accomplish in his first stint with the San Francisco 49ers back in 2011.

Michigan HC Sherrone Moore Takes Over

Heading into the 2024 season, former Offensive Coordinator Sherrone Moore has become the Michigan Wolverines' new head coach. Moore stepped in last season in Jim Harbaugh's absence during his six-game suspension. With Sherrone Moore being on staff, he was said to be a part of the allegations that Michigan was facing.

Over the past two days, reports have been released stating that Moore deleted text messages between him and Connor Stallions, who started the sign-stealing fiasco. Moore is labeled as a "repeat violator" in being accused of contacting recruits in 2020 along with Harbaugh. If Moore is found guilty based on their recent Notice Of Allegations, it would be considered a Level II violation with the information that the NCAA has found.

    Michigan 2024 Season

In a little over three weeks, the Michigan Wolverines will play their first contest against Fresno State in Ann Arbor. The first true test will be the following week when the Texas Longhorns come into the" Big House" on September 7. Players are looking to get back to the grind and continue their run at another College Football Playoff National Championship. There will be more to come as the days continue and before the 2024 college football season kicks off on August 24.
