More ground cinnamon products have been added to a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) health alert due to elevated lead levels, with several brands sold in New York.

The FDA recommended the additional nine firms voluntarily recall the affected products last week after product testing by the agency and state programs determined certain ground cinnamon products contain elevated levels of lead and exposure to the affected products may be unsafe.

This is not the first time ground cinnamon has been added to a health alert in 2024. On March 6 and July 25 , the FDA sent out alerts warning the public that seven other cinnamon products contained lead. The FDA continues to work with states to test cinnamon sold directly to consumers at retail and to test cinnamon at import.

Which ground cinnamon brands have been recalled?

The lead levels in these products are significantly lower than the lead levels associated with the WanaBana cinnamon apple puree and applesauce products recalled last year , the FDA says, but the agency is recommending recalls of multiple brands of ground cinnamon products with elevated lead levels ranging from 2.03 to 20 parts per million (ppm).

What to do if you've purchased recalled products

Consumers should not eat, sell or serve the affected ground cinnamon products and should dispose of them, the FDA said. If you think you or someone you know has been exposed to elevated lead levels, contact your healthcare provider as most people don't have immediate symptoms of lead exposure.

And to report a complaint or adverse event — such as illness or serious allergic reaction — the FDA says you can:

• Call an FDA Consumer Complaint Coordinator if you wish to speak directly to a person about your problem.
• Complete an electronic Voluntary MedWatch form online.
• Complete a paper Voluntary MedWatch form that can be mailed to FDA.
• Visit www.fda.gov/fcic for additional consumer and industry assistance.
