Australian Olympic star Tom Craig has issued an apology after he was arrested by police in Paris during the Summer Games.

The field hockey star was picked up by police for allegedly attempting to buy cocaine in Paris, Sky News Australia reported . He was released with an admonishment and no charges, then made a statement apologizing for his actions.

In his statement, Craig stressed that his actions did not reflect his country's Olympic delegation.

"I'd firstly like to apologize for what has occurred over the past 24 hours. I made a terrible mistake and I take full responsibility for my actions," Craig said in a statement to reporters.

"My actions are my own and in no way reflect the values of my family, my teammates, my friends, my sport and the Australian Olympic Committee. I've embarrassed you all and I'm truly sorry."

The Herald Sun reported that Craig briefly tried to flee police at the scene. The Australian Olympic Committee stripped Craig's Olympic rights and banned him from the Olympic Village, the report added. He was also barred from marching with other athletes from his country at the closing ceremony.
