Costco is set to introduce a new policy requiring customers to scan their membership cards before entering its warehouse stores, as per the company's website.

Over the next few months, card scanners will be installed at store entrances and once operational, all members will need to present either a physical or digital membership card for access.

Non-members will only be allowed entry if accompanied by a valid member. If an individual attempts to enter with an expired or inactive membership, attendants stationed at the entrance will request them to renew their account.

Those with a membership card lacking a photo may be asked to provide a valid photo ID.

Despite these changes, the company's website clarifies that non-members can still purchase pharmacy prescriptions online or in-store, and while a membership is required to buy glasses or contacts from the optical center, it isn't necessary for booking an appointment with an in-house optometrist.

Costco sells items in bulk and uses a membership model to keep prices low for shoppers.

Last year, the company began cracking down on unauthorized card-sharing, becoming stricter about checking shoppers' photo membership cards at self-checkout.

This latest move follows the company's announcement of a membership price increase.

From September 1, the price of a Gold Star membership will rise from $60 to $65. Executive memberships will also see an increase, going from $120 to $130, per King 5.

The maximum annual 2% cash back reward for Executive members will be raised from $1,000 to $1,250 when prices increase. The last time membership prices were increased was in June 2017.
