“How did you save your day?”

If anyone has asked you this lately, or if you’ve noticed it over the course of your days, then you’ve tapped into a compelling and timely notion that’s found its way into our everyday lives.

As my friend Rian describes it, “How did you save your day?” is about the idea that we have little control over how we spend our days, between jobs, kids, partners, financial pressures, physical or other limitations, etc. All in all, our time follows fairly restrictive patterns. Nonetheless, at the end of the day, we have a chance to carve out just a few minutes to “save the day” for ourselves in a very intentional way.

Which brings us to the wine, as a mindful option for a mini-holiday of our own choosing, similar to the “wine as micro vacation” theme that Matthew and I wrote about a few weeks ago.

    Read the article here

There are three options from around the wine spectrum that I’ve personally used to “save a day” recently, including sparkling wine (which makes me start to giggle just thinking about it, shifting the whole tenor of the moment), Amaretto (whose intense sweetness lasts well beyond the swallow of each sip), and rosé, as long as it’s well-chilled and sipped ideally while sitting in a comfortable seat, commiserating with a friend or two about the challenges of the day.

Which is, perhaps, an option bettering even wine as a way to save your day: commiserating — talking — with friends about the challenges of our days.

I'm blessed to be 20 years into my wine career, and there have been times when I consumed more alcohol than I do today. It was a crutch within the job. Social, gastronomic, and a vibe setter.

Working in retail, we tasted wine during our shifts which often started as early as 11am to 1pm. That little mid-day buzz made helping customers quite interesting at times.

Working in wine bars, we'd kind of drink all night. Doors opened at 5pm, and the wine was flowing from beginning to end. With so much access, I had to change my relationship to alcohol in order to cement my future in the industry.

Nowadays I try to only indulge in drinking when I'm traveling, granted that's a lot as of late. So I've found other ways to bring joy...

How do I save my day, these days?

    It's all about amplifying others.

And in particular, highlighting and amplifying the hard work of inspired people in the wine industry. If they are doing cool stuff, I want you to know about it.

That makes my day pretty darn good. Not a lot of them need saving these days, but I'll take it.
