Chelsea have made a bold move by signing Samu Omorodion from Atletico Madrid for a whopping €40.6 million (£35m/$44.4m), making him their most expensive signing of the summer.

The renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed the deal with his famous “here we go.” The documents are being prepared, and Omorodion is set for medical tests.

The 20-year-old striker will join Chelsea on a seven-year contract, marking a significant investment in young talent.

This transfer concludes Chelsea’s long search for a backup striker to support Nicolas Jackson, who was signed from Villarreal last year. Omorodion’s price tag surpasses the €35 million ($38.2m) paid for Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, highlighting the club’s commitment to strengthening their attacking options.

A roll of the dice on raw talent

Initially, Omorodion was a dark horse in the transfer market, with interest in other players like Jhon Duran taking centre stage. However, the move became more likely after Atletico Madrid sold Alvaro Morata and made big signings like Alexander Sørloth and potentially Julian Alvarez, freeing up Omorodion for the transfer.

Bayer Leverkusen and other clubs tried to enter the race, but Chelsea’s straight cash offer of £35 million ($44.4m) secured the young striker’s services. Omorodion’s rise from obscurity to a top-flight talent has been rapid, and Chelsea are betting on his potential.

Chelsea’s strategy of doubling down on physically talented young La Liga strikers mirrors their approach with Jackson. Both players have shown promise but remain raw talents. The club is taking an intense gamble, hoping that Omorodion’s development will pay off and provide a significant boost to their attacking lineup.

While it’s a high-stakes move, Chelsea fans will be eagerly watching to see if Omorodion can make the step up and become a key player for the Blues in the coming seasons.
