    30 YEARS AGO: AUGUST 11, 1994

    • Former City Council member Dan Blonigan was appointed to fill the remaining term of Patty Olsen, who resigned from the Council in July.

    • The City Council received a petition from residents on Gillard Avenue asking that a sewer plan be reconsidered.

    • Missionaries expressed concern for the residents of Haiti where there was political unrest and tension.

    • The Kelly Meyer Circus was rolling into town with its big top erected near Pinewood Elementary School.

    • ADS: First National Bank of Monticello was offering an interest rate of 5.3% on CDs.

    • At the Monticello Theater: “In the Army Now,” “True Lies,” “Flintstones,” “The Mask” and “Clear and Present Danger.”

    15 YEARS AGO: JULY 30, 2009

    • Local automobile dealerships were doing brisk business because of the federal government’s Car Allowance Rebate Program, known as “Cash for Clunkers.”

    • Rep. Michelle Bachmann’s DFL challenger, Elwyn Tinklenberg, dropped out of the race for the 6th District congressional seat.

    • Habitat for Humanity was building a home in Big Lake for the Jenson family.

    • Little Mountain secretary Carol Bitzer was recognized as a “Big Helper.”

    • The Monticello Rotary Club was making plans for its newest event, “Taste of Monticello.”

    • ADS: National Garage Sale Day was being planned for Aug. 10; West Metro Buick, Pontiac, and GMC was holding a pothole sale.

    • On the Monster Screen at the Monticello Theater: “G.I. Joe”
