LaNorris Sellers has already developed quite a bit over just a lone season in college so far. It’s now about how he takes another step as a redshirt freshman and, as of now, the likely starting quarterback for South Carolina .

Sellers spoke about his growth as a player during a media availability this week amidst fall camp in Columbia . To this point, he thought where he has grown the most was in learning at this level.

“I’d say knowledge and communication are the two biggest things I’ve improved on since last year,” said Sellers.

Now, going into this season, Sellers wants to continue to iron out the details in his game and at the position. He highlighted his work in the pocket as one of those basics that he’s getting down.

“Something I can work is probably just, like, smaller things, the fundamentals of it,” said Sellers. “Staying calm in the pocket, just keep going through my progressions – things like that.”

Sellers was the backup behind Spencer Rattler last yearin his collegiate debut. In that time, he appeared in three games and has completed all four of his throws for 86 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He also rushed five times for 51 yards and another score.

Sellers has since left the spring and entered the fall as the leading quarterback in the competition for the Gamecocks .

There’s still a lot of steps left in Sellers’ maturation based on his age alone if not his potential too. That’s what he and South Carolina will be trying to tap into now over practice this month and games this season as their projected starter.

Sellers seeing growth in fall camp

So much of LaNorris Sellers’ first year at South Carolina was about getting his feet wet and adapting to the college game.

As he prepares for his second season, the redshirt freshman quarterback is a lot more prepared for what’s ahead.

“It’s a lot easier,” Sellers said. “Last year, I was pretty much just learning the system. This year, I actually understand the system. I can go out there, execute it, do it, communicate better, know what everybody else is doing.”

“We’re fast learners – everybody’s pretty much grasped the system faster,” he said. “We’ve been going over it for a while so we’ve just got to go out there and execute. We’re doing that a lot better.”

Sellers is also in the heat of a quarterback battle. South Carolina hasn’t officially named him as the starter yet with him and Robby Ashford competing for that role. Still, Sellers called it a “healthy competition” as both bring different qualities to the table.

“He has college experience. I’ve been taking that from him. I have knowledge of the system and he’s taking that from me,” Sellers said. “We’ve still got to go out there and do it and compete and just lift each other up when stuff goes bad and then just help each other out.”
