    Draymond Green Schools Brian Windhorst

    By Lance Roberson,

    2024-08-08

Brian Windhorst is a distinct reporter in that the ESPN insider strays from predictions. Instead, he presents a scenario and provides tidbits of news that his sources allow. However, in a rare stroke of opinion, Windhorst revealed who he figured as Team USA's toughest competition for a gold medal.

Ironically, after one of the rare occasions he presented a prediction, Draymond Green took an exception to Windhorst's opinion.

“Stop it,” Green said on a recent episode of his eponym podcast. “Here’s why that doesn’t work: That doesn’t work because they have [Nikola Jokić], no question. They don’t have a guard that can compete with Tyrese Haliburton. That is zero disrespect to Tyrese Haliburton. But Tyrese Haliburton has been the guard out of the rotation on Team USA."

To Green's credit, Jokic is essentially Serbia's point guard, as Serbia lacks a legitimate ball-handling guard. Conversely, Team USA offers a plethora of players who can handle point guard duties, including LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and, to a lesser extent, Haliburton. The fact that Haliburton seldom plays indicates the strengths of Team USA's roster.

Green flatly said he completely disagreed with Windhorst. Instead of merely applying criticism with no solution, Green offered his opinion on who can compete on a higher level with Team USA.

“The next best team in the Olympics is Germany. They’re the second-best team,” Green, who won a pair of gold medals with Team USA in the 2016 and 2020 Olympics. “The gap between one and two is very significant. But one and two is Team USA and then Germany," Green said.

Ultimately, Green declared no national basketball team could compete with the USA. Green's analysis isn't off-base, as the results symbolize Team USA's advantage over Serbia, which lost to Team USA in its previous two outings leading up to the elimination round of the Olympic playoffs. Team USA faces Serbia on Thursday at noon Pacific Time.
