The Bills are clearly enjoying life without Stefon Diggs even if the future is a bit cloudy

Sean McDermott and Josh Allen have been doing plenty of talking, and the topic of Stefon Diggs keeps coming up. It likely will all season. Deciding to move on from an All-Pro wide receiver and replacing him, as well as one can, with a rookie is a precarious choice to make.

So far though, before the games begin to count, Allen and McDermott both seem to be happy with life after Diggs – tentatively speaking, that is.

Sean McDermott gives positive update on current status of wide receiver room

Sean McDermott may have thrown a little shade at Diggs in his press conference today.

"I mean, I think, more than anything, I like where the where the kind of the unselfishness is in terms of that position," McDermott said.

Maybe it was a dig at Diggs, maybe it wasn't. Either way, the head coach commenting on the position group being selfless seems noteworthy. The wide receiver group has been drawing praise all training camp, from rookie Keon Coleman flourishing and building a strong connection with Allen, to Khalil Shakir seemingly always being open, and newcomer Curtis Samuel showcasing his speed and alignment versatility . This iteration of the Bills has their eyes on the future.

That new-look group, though, will have a lot of ground to make up on last year's offense. The absence of Diggs, as well as Gabriel Davis, leaves behind 152 receptions, 1929 receiving yards, and 15 receiving touchdowns from a year ago. That's a lot of missing production.

That said, the comment from McDermott is timely, coming just a day after Allen wouldn't say that he misses Diggs.

"Stef's a great player, and what he brought to this team was special. So, 'miss,' I don't know if I'd say 'miss.' He was a guy that was reliable, a guy you can look to, he's going to have the juice each and every day. I'm sure he's bringing it over there in Houston. You can't say that you don't miss that, but I am very happy with what we've got going on here and how hard the guys are working," Allen said.

These quotes seem to have more to do with the mentality of Allen, McDermott, and the organization moving on than they do anything else. There's no denying that Diggs was an instrumental member of this team for his tenure in Buffalo – his four seasons in Buffalo saw him rack up 5,372 receiving yards and 37 touchdowns, on their way to winning four state AFC East titles.

The two sides, by the way, will get to see each other again on October 6, when Buffalo heads to Houston for their Week 5 clash.

There's no bad blood here from the Bills' side of things. General Manager Brandon Beane was very clear about that following the trade , and they'll clearly wish nothing but the best for Diggs in his new home – unless, of course, Buffalo sees Houston in the playoffs.
