Hideki Matsuyama won the bronze medal for his third place finish at the Paris Olympics played over the Le Golf National course.

Here we take a look at the bag that helped him to his slice of Olympic glory.

Matsuyama uses a Srixon ZX5 Mk II LS driver set at 9.5 degrees of loft. The Srixon ZX5 Mk II is an under-rated club with Matsuyama using the ‘pro-spec’ low-spin option.

He also uses a pair of fairway woods favouring the TaylorMade Qi10 3-wood and the Cobra King RadSpeed Tour 5-wood.

Matsuyama uses a set of forged irons from Srixon with his 4-iron to pitching wedge all coming from the Srixon Z-Forged II irons range.

He uses three wedges from the Cleveland RTX 4 Forged Prototype range which are not available commercially. His wedge lofts are set at 52, 56 and 60 degree options.

Matsuyama also uses a prototype putter from Scotty Cameron with the precise setup of the club not clear.

Having missed out on a medal in Tokyo this was an emotional medal for the Japanese star.

“I aimed for the gold, but I’m extremely happy to have won this one after struggling at the Tokyo Olympics and not being able to get a medal,” the 32-year-old Matsuyama said.

Matsuyama’s sense of accomplishment was palpable when he clasped his bronze medal and recalled the enthusiasm of the crowd.

“Seeing the enthusiasm of this week’s gallery, I felt that golf is becoming recognized as an Olympic sport. It was a lot of fun,” Matsuyama said.

For professional golfers who are used to travelling to a new site every week, the Olympics provide a distinct environment, and representing their country adds a specific pressure that differs from the four major events.

Shigeki Maruyama, who has coached the Japanese team for three straight Games, was the first to congratulate Matsuyama, running to the practice green and high-fiving him on his medal win.

“This is truly incredible. Twelve years of effort finally paid off,” a tearful Maruyama said as he joined in on the celebrations.
