We're nearing the Kansas City Chiefs' first preseason game of 2024 and the competition is fierce for the final 53-man roster.

As position battles continue, there might be some surprises coming out of camp and some younger players beating out veteran players at key roster spots.

USA Today's Christian D'Andrea thinks the Chiefs could be in store for one of these roster surprises along on the outside, naming wideout Kadarius Toney as a possible surprise cut candidate.

    Potential replacement : Marquise Brown

"Toney’s name is said in exasperation or frustration much more often than it’s ever spoken in elation, making it surprising he’s managed to last as long as he has in Kansas City. The Chiefs are hoping a move to running back can finally put his top-level athleticism to use. It’s also a transition that rarely works out."

There is evidence of Toney falling out of roster favor with a peek at the Chiefs' first training camp depth chart.

The Chiefs have Marquise "Hollywood" Brown and Rashee Rice listed as their two starting receivers . This year's first-round pick, Xavier Worthy, is second-string behind the latter, and Justin Watson is behind the former. Then, trailing behind the likes of Brown, Watson, Skyy Moore, and Mecole Hardman is Toney.

Toney is listed as the fifth-string wideout.

While there's not a monetary savings that comes with releasing Toney, there almost certainly would be a piece of mind savings. Toney has been labeled - and rightfully so - a drop machine during his short time in Kansas City.

And now, he could be on his way out the door.
