Atlanta Braves Losing Streak Leaves Team In Unfamiliar Spot

    2024-08-09

The Atlanta Braves (60-54) are in unfamiliar territory after getting swept by the Milwaukee Brewers in a three-game series. They sit 8.5 games back from the NL East division leaders, the Philadelphia Phillies (69-46). Atlanta has made the playoffs in each of the previous two seasons. Unfortunately, they are out of a wild card spot for the first time since the 2022 MLB campaign.

With 68 games left to finish out the regular season, the Atlanta Braves will have to fight back and win games to reach a playoff spot. The Atlanta Braves are in third place in their division behind the New York Mets, who are in second place with the final wild card spot. Losing three games in a row on their home field puts Atlanta in a bad spot, and will make things even tougher to bounce back from. Will Atlanta be able to rebound?

Atlanta Braves Out Of Playoff Spot

The Atlanta Braves look like they have lost their stride after the recent series against the Milwaukee Brewers. Their hitting was abysmal as they only scored 13 runs in three days while striking out 35 times. Pitching was their biggest downfall as they gave up a total of 52 hits, 34 runs, and eight homers to Milwaukee at Truist Park. The first game was a shutout with Atlanta never scoring a run.

They came up short in the second outing, only falling to the Brewers by three runs. Last night in their final matchup, they gave up 16 runs (tied for most given up all season) to their opponent and did not score even half of those runs as a team. On the mound starting pitcher, Charlie Morton was pulled early in the second inning after giving up nine hits and eight runs scored. It only got worse from that point on with the Brewers adding on eight more runs to ultimately win the game and finish out the series sweep on the road.

    Atlanta Braves Playoff Hopes

The Atlanta Braves will have to put a winning streak together as the season continues. After their recent series loss, they have gone on a five-game losing streak. A playoff push is not out of the question, but the Philadelphia Phillies are the hottest team in the NL East division as it stands right now. They hold a seven-game lead in the division.

Atlanta will be facing difficult tests away from their home turf with games against the Rockies, Giants, and Angels within the next 10 days. Jorge Soler, Matt Olson, Austin Riley, and Marcell Ozuna will have to get the bats going and pick up the slack. Atlanta's statistics in the batter's box have been on the downside in recent games.

Their bullpen struggles also brought on more pressure during the middle of the regular season. In this stretch of contests, too many hits are being given up, which is forcing them to pull their selected starters at a faster rate. This is not a winning formula.

Dominant pitchers such as Spencer Strider and Reynaldo Lopez are on the injured reserve list so that leaves Manager Brian Snitker no choice but to dig deep into his bullpen to complete or finish out games. If the Atlanta Braves do not figure things out soon, the team may not reach the postseason at all in 2024.
