The highly-anticipated and star-studded Borderlands film was met with some shockingly low Rotten Tomatoes scores upon its release.

The film hit theaters on Friday, Aug. 9, and since some critics were able to watch early screenings of the film, it debuted on the website to a zero per cent despite the big names that are attached to it like Cate Blanchett , Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Jamie Lee Curtis and Ariana Greenblatt. As more reviews came out, the score has only increased slightly to seven per cent.

Rotten Tomatoes, which has become a trusted source for determining a movie's quality, divides a film's ratings between the critics and audience score, and while some score highly on both, Borderlands has not been received well by either group. The current score is seven percent for critics and 48 for fans. The reviews that critics and fans have shared on the website have been harsh, piling on their thoughts that the film is nothing like the video game it was adapted from, which is one of the best-selling videogame franchises of all time.

"Console junkies will find themselves involuntarily hammering an imagined X button in the hope of getting back to the gameplay. No good. You’re stuck with this wacko BS," one critic wrote.

"There are still many cinema turkeys headed our way before the year closes," another added. "But this sci-fi gobbler mixes inept directing, terrible writing, indifferent acting and gawdawful CGI into such stupefying boredom, it feels like nothing could top it for badness."

According to some critics and fans, the film had some redeemable qualities, like some performances, and especially for those who were not as familiar with the video game. "Blanchett finds herself in probably the worst film of her career, however, she’s about the only one who can salvage even a speck of integrity in this vapid wasteland of a movie," one critic wrote on the website.

One fan shared a review, giving the film one and a half stars: "A terrible representation of the games I as well as many hold near and dear. Coming into this movie I had low expectations given the casting and the few previews released prior to the movie and I was still disappointed. A movie with zero tension or emotion. A movie with semi-decent action sequences at times but it’s very evident that it’s being held back due to its PG-13 rating."

Another person shared that her review of the film boosted the film from zero percent to a four. "IT WAS ME!!!!! From 0% to 4% on #RottenTomatoes Whatever, man, I had a good time. Pretty crazy to set your review to post at 3am and discover you’re the ONLY one who liked it?! I never played the game, to be fair."

The film follows Lilith (Cate Blanchett), who is an infamous bounty hunter with a mysterious past, who reluctantly returns to her home, Pandora. Her mission is to find the missing daughter of Atlas (Edgar Ramírez) and she forms an unexpected alliance with a ragtag team of misfits, including Roland (Kevin Hart) Tiny Tina (Ariana Greenblatt), Tannis (Jamie Lee Curtis), and Claptrap (Jack Black) to help her on her mission. The film was directed by Eli Roth.
