Could Giants Sign QB After Lock Injury

The New York Giants left their preseason game with a win and a clean bill of health from their starters. Backup quarterback Drew Lock , though, left early after getting knocked around by the Detroit Lions.

Departing earlier than anticipated, the Tommy DeVito show began while the trailers were still running. General manager Joe Schoen said on the broadcast that Lock would’ve been able to play had New York needed him to return to the 14-3 with.

On Friday, New York learned that probably wasn’t the case.

According to Jordan Raanan , Lock suffered an oblique strain and a hip pointer, which should knock him out for a couple weeks.

With only Daniel Jones and Tommy DeVito left on the roster at quarterback, the Giants will likely have to look to the open market for reinforcements.

For one, the team didn’t seem keen on playing Jones, and may wait for the final preseason game to do so. Giving DeVito a full game of reps would still require a backup in case of injury, too. Perhaps most importantly, it’s awfully hard to run an efficient practice without enough quarterbacks.

During Friday’s press conference, head coach Brian Daboll was asked if his team would add a quarterback if Lock was in fact hurt.

“Potentially, if he can’t go,” Daboll said, via SNY .

As such, New York will have a handful of options in front of them. If veteran Matt Barkley is set on playing some more football, he might have Daboll on speed dial. Barkley was a backup with the Buffalo Bills under Daboll and spent time with the Giants last year when the quarterback-pocalypse struck East Rutherford.

Other options include Brian Hoyer, Blaine Gabbert, and Ben DiNucci.
