CALIFORNIA – Avalanche, a platform designed for decentralized applications (dApps) and custom blockchain networks, announced July 30, that the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is launching its own chain on their network.

The company said it's an effort to modernize the vehicle title transfer experience for the state’s 42 million residents.

According to Avalanche, vehicle owners will soon be able to claim these digital titles through the DMV’s mobile wallet app in minutes using a verifiable credential.

The announcement comes a few months after DMV announced it would no longer process certain transactions in offices that can be completed online.

Smart contracts to mediate the title transfer

Avalanche says their escrow-like blockchain smart contracts will mediate the title transfer. This will allow consumers to track and manage their pink slip vehicle titles digitally, which they say will cut down on trips to the DMV and post office.

A smart contract is a self-executing program on a blockchain that automatically enforces and executes the terms of an agreement when predefined conditions are met, without the need for intermediaries.

According to Avalanche their blockchain technology may also provide an early warning system for lien fraud with its core function as an immutable ledger that bad actors cannot manipulate.

Blockchain technology was first conceptualized in 2008 by an anonymous individual or group known as Satoshi Nakamoto, who introduced it as the underlying technology for Bitcoin. The blockchain is a distributed ledger that records transactions across a network of computers in a secure, transparent, and tamper-proof manner.

    Newsom’s vision for blockchain solutions

Avalanche says this initiative is one of the first milestones in Governor Gavin Newsom’s vision of integrating blockchain solutions into government operations.

The state is also exploring blockchain technology for renewable energy certificates, and digital identity verification.
