The Brentsville Road Interchange is now officially open, marking a significant milestone in regional infrastructure with the completion of a $54.9 million project. The interchange, funded entirely by the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority (NVTA), connects the Route 234 Bypass, Prince William County Parkway, Dumfries, and Brentsville roads, and includes a newly introduced pedestrian and bicycle bridge spanning Route 234.

The grand opening was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in late July, attended by a host of local officials and community members. Coles District Supervisor Yesli Vega, whose district encompasses the project area, expressed enthusiasm for the new development. “It’s a great day here for the Coles District. This project has been long overdue and is crucial for connecting the east and west of the county.”

Brentsville District Supervisor Tom Gordy, Occoquan District Supervisor Kenny Boddye, and County Executive Chris Shorter also attended. Shorter emphasized that the project aligns with the county’s goals of enhancing livability and mobility, stating, “This investment in roads and interchanges reflects our commitment to improving mobility across the county.”

Joe Marshall, a representative from the Prince William County Trails and Blueways Council, praised the addition of the pedestrian bridge, highlighting its significance for non-motorized transit. “Biking over this bridge is much safer than navigating high-speed traffic. It’s a fantastic addition and hopefully the first of many to enhance our mobility trail network.”

According to Prince William Department of Transportation Director Rick Canizales, the project was executed using a design-build method, which allowed for simultaneous design and construction. This approach helped complete the project ahead of schedule.

Monica Backmon, CEO of NVTA, lauded the county’s efficient handling of the project. “Prince William serves as a model for effectively managing mobility projects. This project is not just about roads but about creating access and opportunity for residents.”
