Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively Steal Record From Bruce Willis, Demi Moore

Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively took the top two spots at the North American box office this weekend, unseating Bruce Willis and Demi Moore from a decades-old record.

Reynolds’ superhero team-up flick Deadpool & Wolverine took last weekend's number one spot with a $54 million gross. Hot on its heels was It Ends With Us , Lively’s largely female-skewing romantic drama that pulled in a much-larger-than-expected $50 million three-day take.

It’s been 34 years since a married couple last topped the box office , when Willis and Moore appeared in Die Hard 2 and Ghost , respectively. Ghost premiered on July 13, 1990, just 10 days after Die Hard 2 hit theaters. In its opening weekend, the Patrick Swayze-led romance came in second behind Die Hard 2 . In its second week, Ghost came in at number one while Die Hard 2 placed second.

Ghost went on to become the top grossing film of 1990, while Die Hard 2 came in at number eight for the year.

Both Deadpool & Wolverine and It Ends With Us have over-performed within their target demographics and beyond, demonstrating a surprising four-quadrant draw for movies that would seem to appeal to a specific audience.

Sony, the studio which distributed It Ends With Us , pegged the opening in the $23 million range, but pre-sales tracking indicated a much more robust debut in the days before its release. Its outsized gross seems to indicate an appetite for more realistic, adult-skewing dramas in the marketplace.

While It Ends With Us will most likely top $200 million, it’s not going to unseat Deadpool & Wolverine in overall grosses as Ghost did with Die Hard 2 . In its third weekend of release, Shawn Levy’s ultra-violent sequel crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide, putting its gross to-date at a remarkable $1.029 billion. In less than a week, it will overtake Joker ($1.078 billion) as the worldwide highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time .

In addition to starring in their respective films, Lively and Reynolds were involved behind the scenes in both projects. Reynolds produced Deadpool & Wolverine , as Lively did It Ends With Us . Reynolds is also the top-credited screenwriter for Deadpool & Wolverine , and apparently wrote a key scene in It Ends With Us . Of course, Lively made headlines when it was revealed that she was the famous voice behind Lady Deadpool in her husband’s movie, putting an end to months of fan speculation.
