The American Great Lakes Ports Association recently presented two ports on the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway System with the Robert J. Lewis Pacesetter Award at the organization’s annual conference in Chicago on Friday.

The two ports are the Illinois International Port District in Chicago and the Port of Green Bay in Wisconsin.

The award recognize the achievements of U.S ports whose activities increase international tonnage shipped through the St. Lawrence Seaway.

“Congratulations to the two Great Lakes ports being recognized as GLS Pacesetter Award recipients for their achievements during the 2023 Seaway navigation season,” said Adam Tindall-Schlicht, U.S. Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation (GLS) administrator. “Their sustained high performance is a testament to the hard work and resilience of countless, dedicated Great Lakes port professionals. Their leadership and commitment have kept the North American maritime economy thriving, reflecting the dedication and vision across the Great Lakes region.”

Movement of cargo on the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Seaway System annually supports $35 billion in economic activity and more than 241,000 jobs.

The award was established in 1992. Its name was changed in 2001 to posthumously honor GLS Logistics Director Robert J. Lewis who developed and implemented the GLS’s trade development program.
