Gas Leak Shuts Down I-94 Between S.R. 249 and Burns Harbor: Traffic Disrupted

PORTAGE, Ind. – A hazardous gas leak near the Bass Pro Shop in Portage has led to the closure of I-94 between S.R. 249 and the Burns Harbor exit 22, creating significant traffic disruptions in the area.

According to Sgt. Glen Fifield of the Indiana State Police District #13, the interstate is currently closed in both directions due to the gas leak, which was reported earlier today. The Portage Fire Department quickly responded to the scene to manage the situation, but the damaged gas line is posing serious safety risks.

As of 2:10 p.m., Portage Fire Chief informed authorities that NIPSCO, the utility company responsible for handling the leak, estimated it would take at least three hours to secure the situation. During this time, the interstate will remain closed, and motorists are strongly advised to seek alternate routes and avoid the area.
