Warning: This article contains major spoilers for The Umbrella Academy series finale.

Elliot Page Says He Felt Pressure to Get Trans Representation Right In His New Movie, ‘Close To You:’ “As One Should”

It’s been one week since The Umbrella Academy shocked fans with an emotional, dramatic series finale that—major spoil alert—found all the main characters sacrificing themselves for the greater good. As one character, Five (played by Aidan Gallagher) puts it, it’s worse than if they killed themselves—they erased themselves from ever existing in the first place. It was a bold way to end the show’s four-season run, which first aired on Netflix in 2019. Unsurprisingly, the ending ruffled a few feathers among fans.

In a recent interview with Decider, star Elliot Page said that for him, the ending was not so shocking, however. “When I first read it, of course, I was—I mean, I guess I wasn’t shocked,” he said, when asked about his initial reaction to the series finale. “The ending actually made sense to me.”

As for the fan reactions online, Page said he’s all too practiced at avoiding angry people on the internet. “I haven’t, really,” Page said in response to whether he’d seen the fan reactions. “I’m not really an online person. That’s been something I’ve removed a bit of from my life these last couple of years, to be honest. So I don’t necessarily always engage with those things, for reasons you probably can imagine.”

The Academy Award-nominated actor known for Juno came out as a trans man on social media in 2020. Soon after Page’s announcement, his character in The Umbrella Academy , Viktor, also came out as trans. The series, which was adapted from the comic book series of the same name by writer Gerard Way and illustrator Gabriel Bá, tells the story of adopted siblings with superpowers who battle evil forces and several impending apocalypses.

Time-wimey time travel stuff throws reality out of wack, and so, in Season 4, the siblings realize the only way to restore the timeline is to erase themselves from existence. For Page, the end for his character was overshadowed by the end of the series for the cast and crew.

“It’s more the overall feeling of just the show ending,” he said. “I’ve never been on a series this long, or done a job this long. Just being in LA, for all the press was with everybody, and reflecting on the whole show… it was definitely sad to say goodbye.”
