In Lovely One, Justice Jackson shares her compelling life story, tracing her path from her roots in Washington, D.C., and Miami, Florida, to her groundbreaking appointment to the Supreme Court. The memoir’s title, inspired by the Yoruba phrase "Lovely One," reflects the name given to her by her aunt, a Peace Corps volunteer in West Africa. This powerful narrative transcends mere biography, offering profound reflections on identity, justice, and perseverance, according to a press release.

The memoir delves into her family’s ascent from segregation to her historic confirmation, exploring the challenges she faced and the triumphs she achieved. With unflinching honesty, Justice Jackson reveals the dedication required to succeed in the legal profession, the balance of a demanding career with personal life, and the inspiration behind her relentless pursuit of justice.

Born in Washington, D.C., and raised in Miami, Florida, Justice Brown Jackson holds degrees from Harvard University and has served as a law clerk for Justice Stephen G. Breyer. Her career spans roles as a public defender, Vice Chair of the U.S. Sentencing Commission, and a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

Participants at the event will have the chance to purchase signed copies of Lovely One through the Book + Ticket package. In Conversation: Ketanji Brown Jackson is part of The Apollo’s Fall/Winter 2024 season, continuing the institution’s legacy of fostering impactful cultural dialogues.

The Apollo’s In Conversation series amplifies the voices of artists, leaders, and cultural icons, delving into the African American and African diasporic narrative. Previous participants have included prominent figures such as Joy Ann Reid, Rachel Maddow, John Legend, Ta-Nehisi Coates, and Oprah Winfrey.

Known for cultivating emerging talent and launching legendary careers, The Apollo continues to serve as a creative catalyst for Harlem, New York City, and the world. In 2024, The Apollo expanded with the opening of The Apollo Stages at the Victoria Theater, marking its first-ever renovation and expansion in nearly 90 years.
