Brewers OF Christian Yelich to Undergo Season-Ending Back Surgery

The Milwaukee Brewers will be without their star outfielder, Christian Yelich, for the remainder of the season.

The franchise announced on Thursday that Yelich, 32, will undergo season-ending back surgery after being sidelined with lower back inflammation since July 24.

The decision comes after Yelich consulted with a spine specialist in hopes of avoiding surgery through rehabilitation. Unfortunately, those plans have now shifted, ending what had been Yelich’s best season since his 2019 MVP campaign.

In 73 games, Yelich was hitting .315 with a .909 OPS, 12 doubles, 11 home runs, 42 RBIs, and 21 stolen bases—reminiscent of the player who once ranked among the top talents in Major League Baseball.

"I ultimately felt it was in the best interest of myself and the Brewers to have surgery with the expectation of being back at 100% for next season," Yelich wrote in a statement . "We have a very special team here, and it will be disappointing not to be able to contribute on the field down the stretch."

Brewers fans will no doubt be disappointed to see Yelich's resurgent year cut short. The former NL MVP had battled back issues throughout his career, but his performance this season had sparked hope that he had regained his elite form.

The Brewers, who are in the thick of a playoff race, will have to move forward without one of their most productive bats in the lineup. However, the focus now shifts to Yelich’s recovery and ensuring he returns fully healthy next season.

As Yelich prepares for surgery, the Brewers will hope their depth can carry them through the final stretch of the season. But for now, the 12-year veteran’s season ends on a bittersweet note—marked by a return to form but ultimately cut short by injury.
