The police will often detain someone in domestic incidents because of the high level of emotions during them. Doesn't mean they are being prejudicial, they are just controlling the scene. Just because this man called it in doesn't mean he isn't the one in the wrong. Maybe he took the kid from the ex in the first place? All the cops initially have is one side of the story and many people flat out lie during domestic calls.
