This is only beneficial to the poorly run city schools. The test scores in the Buncombe County schools will now drop (with the condensing of scores with the county test scores) and result in a decrease in state and federal monies. This merger means, the county schools will be receiving LESS benefits.

Think the original idea was to create a separate urban school within the 6 mile downtown area. An idea that over time, has become somewhat laughable, due to the complaints of overpriced housing in the 6 mile radius. Kinda like “Field of Dreams”. Except no one came and many fled. The county at best, is rural, leaning suburban. There are minimal small firms conducting traditional urban work (limited manufacturing, tech, utilities, banking, and public sector). Until critical mass is reached in these job market sectors, it seems unrealistic to continue down the urban path. With 20% of the country funded by tourism, the primary employer is currently seasonal hospitality or agriculture. In order to provide limited resources, a merger is the best option for the country to save on procurement, district facilities maintenance, and some student services.
