    Alain Delon's greatest love story

    2024-08-18

Alain Delon died at 88 in his home in France: the world lost one of international cinema's most iconic stars of its golden era. (according to the source Washington Post)

We all grew up watching at least once the "Mask of Zorro" movie from 1975, which established Alain Delon as one of the hottest men ever born.

After Jean-Paul Belmondo defined French cool at the beginning of the New Wave in Godard’s “Breathless,” Delon and director Melville very consciously redefined it in “Le Samourai,” in which he played a killer for hire - and he was compared to James Dean (source: Variety.com)

To all that beauty and talent we can add that he was French, such as other iconic stars: the amazing Brigitte Bardot, or Jean-Paul Belmondo. A detail that added flavor and charm to his international fame and controversial love life.

Beautiful women tended to fall at the feet of the French screen idol, and maybe the most memorable and splendid of all was German actress Romy Schneider.

She thought Delon "arrogant" when they first met in 1958, although she was by far the bigger star after the success of the trilogy of "Sissi" films in which she played the Austro-Hungarian empress. (source: france24.com)

They were engaged in a matter of months, although never married. Four tumultuous years later, Delon left her by letter. Yet when they reunited to make "The Swimming Pool" in 1968, sparks flew. (source: france24.com)

One of the most beautiful films, starring the iconic couple and their great chemistry, is from 1958, and is called "Christine". The love period drama shows the two in their splendid youth, and is a great example of a beautiful, forgotten Golden Cinema gem.

In case you want to see Alain Delon and Romy Schneider at their best, this is indeed one movie not to be missed, for the refinery of the plot, caracters, decor, and much more. The film was based on the 1894 play Liebelei (Flirtation) by Arthur Schnitzler, which had starred Romy Schneider's mother, Magda Schneider. (according to source: Wikipedia)

Alain Delon admitted in the end that Romy Schneider was the "love of my life" after her tragic death in 1982. (source: france24.com) Indeed, we could not see a more charming couple of great actors in timeless movies.
