Back to his days at Oklahoma, Baker Mayfield has shown the capacity of a strong leader, whether through vocal demonstration or on-field performance. Expected to fill a transitional role last season for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, those traits played a part in his winning over the team and claiming the permanent starting job.

Under Mayfield, the Bucs maintained control of the NFC South and advanced to the NFC Divisional round. Those achievements preceded his three-year $100 million contract earned in the offseason.

But its not only the front office and coaching staff who Mayfield won over through the last year. He has gained the respect of his teammates who have put their confidence in him to keep the team among the contenders in the conference.

After practice on Monday , wide receiver Chris Godwin spoke to those qualities and the growth he has seen in his quarterback.

"There's not a question about who the guy is. He knows that it's his team. I think he moves accordingly ... Understanding the level of communication that needs to happen between him and the rest of the guys," Godwin said.

"Whether its where we need to be at or about improving specific plays or just communicating the things that him and Liam talk about so we are all on the same page."

Having solid connections with a receiving core is important for an NFL quarterback. Perhaps the skill level of players like Godwin and Mike Evans make that task easier, but its clear Mayfield has established those.

Mayfield's role as a conduit for the rest of the Bucs offense and Liam Coen has significance as the team navigates a new system. Parlaying that duty with the leadership qualities he naturally presents makes him a considerably valuable piece to the Bucs' aspirations for this season.

But taking on the responsibility as "the guy" has its burdens. Mayfield will now be expected to improve on the success of last season, not just meet the minimum demand of filling a starter's role.

However, if Godwin's comments are any indication, he has the belief of his organization behind him.
