Does Anyone Have A Logical Explanation Why The Falcons Are Sitting Michael Penix During Preseason?
I’ll be the first to admit; I think it’s totally insane when teams play their starters during the preseason. Except when it comes to Michael Penix, he’s not slated to start after they gave all of the money to Kirk Cousins. The Falcons have decided they’ve seen enough from the former Washington signal caller and won’t play him another snap during the preseason.
“It was all about that. Last week we wanted to get him out there and get a feel for what he was in a live game, which we kind of already knew ,” Morris said, via video from Justin Felder of Fox5. “We wanted to see him be able to answer questions, talk about it on the sideline, go out there and execute, make mistakes and know what to do. . . . We saw enough last week of Michael Penix in the live stuff and now we had the chance to mitigate him in practice, you know, we give him a bunch of live stuff in practice that you do everything that you would do in a game other than get hit.”
“We feel really good where we’re at with Michael. . . . Mike showed us last week enough that we don’t have to play him [again] in the preseason,” Morris said.
So the Falcons played Penix in a portion of one preseason game and then have decided they won’t play him in the last two games. That would make sense if he was an established starter. What about the part where they gave Cousins all the money? What about the part that Penix isn’t going to play a snap this year if Cousins is healthy? Doesn’t Penix need reps if he’s not going to get any during the actual season? Isn’t now the time they should get him playing time?
Something really isn’t adding up here. Something is going on behind the scenes. It doesn’t make sense otherwise.
If they get off to a slow start, will the Falcons say screw it and make the switch sooner than we all expect?
This situation is worth monitoring. That’s all I know.
Then again, it could just be the fact that the Falcons are brain dead. Which is obviously the case after you give Ryan Pace a promotion … the same guy who picked Mitch Trubisky soooooooo.
