No structures were damaged, no injuries reported

    – A vegetation fire early Tuesday morning prompted evacuations near San Luis Obispo High School. Firefighters successfully contained the blaze.

At 4:37 a.m. on Aug. 20, San Luis Obispo City Fire Department units responded to multiple reports of a vegetation fire at the top of Bishop Street. The first fire unit arrived to find a two- to three-acre fire burning in grass and light fuels, with winds causing the fire to spread at a moderate rate. Structures were immediately threatened, leading to structure protection efforts, a second alarm at 4:50 a.m., and the evacuation of approximately 80 homes. The evacuation zone extended from Syndey Street to San Luis Obispo High School and northeast of Johnson Avenue.

Firefighters from the City of San Luis Obispo and Cal Fire/San Luis Obispo County Fire worked together to stop the fire’s forward progress, containing it to approximately 50 acres. No structures were damaged, and no injuries were reported.

Power in the area was impacted, and PG&E worked to restore it. Evacuation orders have been lifted, and the San Luis Obispo Police Department assisted residents in returning to their homes. Traffic on Johnson Avenue remains open.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
