In a heartfelt tribute to one of its most dedicated sons, New York City honored rapper Fat Joe with a Key to the City on Tuesday night (Aug. 20). The ceremony took place at the Up NYC concert held at Orchard Beach, in the Bronx, the very borough that shaped his legendary career. The 54-year-old rapper, known for his unwavering pride in his New York roots, received the prestigious honor from Mayor Eric Adams during a surprise appearance on stage.

Mayor Adams praised Fat Joe not only for his contributions to music but also for his philanthropic efforts, acknowledging the artist’s deep connection to the city and his consistent support for his community. "Fat Joe, who's getting the Key to the City of New York. All his legendary - his music, a real brother, authentic - we want to give you this key," Adams said, as the audience erupted in applause.

Fat Joe, also known as Joey Crack, took a moment to express his gratitude and reflect on the pioneers of hip-hop who inspired him throughout his career. "Shout-out my wife, my daughter, shout-out my favorite aunt in the world. I gotta thank the pioneers. From Melle Mel, Mr. Ness to KRS-One - my whole life I been trying to be KRS-One - LL Cool J, Heavy D and the list goes on," he said. His words resonated deeply with the crowd, many of whom had followed his journey from the Bronx streets to global stardom.

Continuing the celebration, Fat Joe performed some of his biggest hits, including "Lean Back" and "My Lifestyle," keeping the energy high and the crowd engaged. The concert was more than just a musical performance; it was a celebration of the Bronx, hip-hop culture, and the enduring legacy of one of its most influential figures.

As Fat Joe celebrated his birthday week, the honor served as a reminder of his impact on the city and the genre that he has represented so passionately. With 2024 on the horizon, Fat Joe’s influence shows no signs of waning. He has successfully transitioned his popular Instagram Live debates into a forthcoming talk show on Starz, executive produced by none other than NBA superstar LeBron James.
