Mississippi couple arrested for installing faulty fire suppression systems in counties across state

A Mississippi couple has been arrested for allegedly installing faulty and used fire suppression systems in commercial kitchens across at least 13 Mississippi counties.

Daniel and Sherri Finnegan were taken into custody on Wednesday, August 21, and booked into the Smith County Jail. They are facing charges of false pretense and violations of the Mississippi Fire Prevention Code.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office (SFMO) reported that the systems installed by the Finnegans were neither functional nor tested before being put into service, posing significant risks in the event of a fire. Daniel Finnegan is also accused of falsely tagging fire extinguishers as tested, repainting, and replacing parts on used extinguishers, then selling them as new.

The Finnegans operated their business, Finnegan’s Fire Safety Equipment, out of Pelahatchie without registering with the Secretary of State. Their clientele reportedly included daycares and other businesses across the state.

The SFMO and Smith County deputies executed a search warrant at the couple’s home on Thursday morning. Based on the evidence gathered, more than 50 additional charges are pending in counties including Adams, Covington, Hinds, Jones, and others.

The office is offering resources to help affected businesses replace the faulty systems with new, compliant equipment.
