It’s officially the age of friendship. Since the pandemic, “how to meet new friends” has been an increasingly common Google search. More than romantic relationships or familiar relationships, friendship, especially female friendship, has increasingly become the focus on social media, podcasts and advice blogs. Audiences are moving away from isolation and loneliness and prioritizing platonic companionship by reconnecting with an old friend or meeting someone new.

While making new friends in adulthood can seem daunting, it also takes a lot of courage and gumption to try to rekindle with an old friend. Whether time and distance took its toll or you had a falling out, reconnecting with an old friend takes effort.

Here’s how to take the first step and reconnect with a former best friend.

    Extend an Olive Branch

Time and distance can take a toll on any friendship. If you are hoping to reconnect with an old friend, you’ll need to extend an olive branch. That might mean sending the first “hello” text and asking how they are doing.

You might have to endure a few nerves initially, but more than likely, an old friend will be happy to hear from you. The first step starts with a simple “hello.”

    Celebrate Them

Another great way to reconnect with an old friend is to celebrate them and what they have accomplished. Life is full of little moments, and celebrating a friend is a great way to reconnect. You might celebrate them by posting on social media, giving them a call, or sending them a card or small gift.

    Share Memories

Everyone is hyper connected to their phones nowadays. The good thing is that your phone will remind you of where you were three years ago, five years ago or 10 years ago.

If you desire to reconnect with an old friend, send a photo or video of a fun memory. This could be a great conversation starter and a good laugh. This will easily break the ice as you recount what might be a core memory or a long lost, distant one.

    Reunite With Mutual Friends

Another great way to reconnect with old friends is to reunite with mutual friends. Group hangs are always easier and can help bridge the gap of award, silent moments.

A low pressure, low stakes group gathering reduces the pressure of a get-to-know-you-again meetup. If you plan a group activity like bowling, karaoke or dancing, then it lightens the mood and helps you reconnect with your friend.

    Connect on Social Media

Sometimes, the best way to reconnect is by engaging on social media. Start with a simple “like” on a post or dropping an emoji reaction.

Next, leave a thoughtful comment on one of their posts. Leave a fun and genuine comment celebrating them. If a genuine conversation stirs up, make the next move by sending them a DM and asking if they’d like to catch up on the phone some time.

    Put Yourself Out There

To truly reconnect and rebuild with a former friend, it will require you to put yourself out there. If you had a friendship falling out, it is necessary to put your cards on the table. If you want to build a bridge, it’ll start by pursuing an honest conversation. Be clear about your reason for reaching out and your intentions to resolve the conflict. Making the first move will require courage.
