As the popularity of speed cameras sore, some question if they're worth it

New York City — As AI grows in popularity, technology's influence will continue to rise. One notable case is the rise of speed cameras.

With now more than 2,000-speed cameras in the city, some question if the City That Never Sleeps has now become the "City of Big Brother Never Stops Watching You."

Drivers openly complain that speed cameras feel eerily similar to the new "Big Brother."

"I think it's ridiculous, honestly. Taking people's money," Kaelan Milheireo said.

In the first half of 2024, drivers on Staten Island alone were issued over $11 million in speed-camera tickets.

No wonder some critics have openly complained these "speed cameras are just a money grab."

"It's just a big basic gotcha and a money grab," said Jay Beeber, of the National Motorists Association. "And that's what this is, unfortunately, about. It's really not about safety."

If you have to wonder if it's a money grab, don't, it is. The law says these cameras have to be calibrated daily and annually and I've tried to raise that objection but every ALJ simply ignores it. Then there's the aiming issue. There is absolutely no way to guarantee that although you are in lane 2 and the cam says lane 2, the actual speed reader is on lane 2 and not another lane.
