Billie Jean Newton, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully in her sleep surrounded by family on Friday, Aug. 23, 2024.

She was born in Rockingham in 1946 to the late T. W. and Sarah L. Deese.

After graduating from high school, she worked in accounts payable at Burlington. She then met the love of her life, LeRoy and moved to Florida where she worked at the Amway Center. She would comment that this was her favorite job as it afforded her the opportunity to cheer on the Orlando Magic and give children gifts she would pick up at the dollar store as she helped them find their seats.

She loved spending time outdoors, especially on the boat with LeRoy, where she was affectionately known to everyone as the “Dock Mom.” Later in her life, she resided with Lisah and Keith in Florida where she loved going to the pool and everyone knew her simply as “Momma.” She also loved riding the trails in the golf cart and watching the neighborhood kids play in the afternoon.

After moving back to Rockingham, she enjoyed going to Wednesday bowling, church, and spending time outside. She was especially fond of riding in the Ranger, going to the pool, and watching the ducks and geese while fishing at Bennett’s pond.

She was preceded in death by her late husband and fishing partner, LeRoy; and brothers, Harry and Anthony (Tony) Deese.

She is survived by her daughters, Linnie Carlisle and Lisah Wilson (Keith); grandchildren, Kim, Nicole, Hunter and Alex; great-grandchildren, Alyana and Cassidy; brother, Tim Deese; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at Harrington Funeral Home, Hamlet, on Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2024, with the visitation at 2 p.m. followed by the service at 3 p.m., with the Rev. Dean Dixon officiating.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Richmond County for their care and compassion, in particular nurse Christine and Ms. Myrtle. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Hospice of Richmond County, 1119 N. U.S. Highway 1, Rockingham, NC 28379.

Harrington Funeral Home & Crematory is serving the Newton family.
