SAINT JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. — In a move aimed at improving student well-being and reducing classroom disruptions, the Saint Joseph County Department of Health has launched an innovative program to enhance hygiene and clothing supplies across local schools.

The initiative introduces a dedicated School Health Liaison, Ashley Helman, who is working directly with school nurses to ensure that each school is stocked with essential personal care items and spare clothing. This effort is designed to address common issues faced by students, such as accidents or unexpected spills, without causing undue stress or delay.

"When a student has an accident, they’re often sent to the nurse’s office while their parents are contacted," Helman explains. "In the meantime, if the student needs new clothes, the nurse often has to manage with dwindling supplies or personally fund replacements."

Nurses, like Kellie Devlaminck from Liberty Elementary School, have expressed the challenges they face. “We had some supplies when I started, but as they ran out, I found myself purchasing items out of pocket to ensure we had what we needed. This program will alleviate that burden and ensure we can provide for students more consistently.”

The program relies on community contributions to maintain its supply. Donations can be made through the Saint Joseph County Department of Health’s website, where an Amazon wish list details the most needed items, including hygiene products, clothing, menstrual supplies, and specific food items.

The goal of this program is not only to keep students clean and comfortable but also to minimize classroom absences. "With this new program, we aim to quickly address minor accidents so students can return to class without long waits," Devlaminck added.

This initiative exemplifies a community-driven approach to supporting education and student health, reinforcing the commitment to ensuring that every student’s needs are met promptly and effectively.
