Recology, a leading employee-owned waste management company, has begun testing North America's first hydrogen fuel cell-powered electric refuse collection vehicle in San Francisco.

This groundbreaking vehicle, developed in partnership with New Way Trucks and Hyzon, marks a significant step in the U.S.-led transition to zero-emission energy, aimed at transforming the global waste industry and addressing climate change.

San Francisco is the first city in North America to pilot this innovative vehicle, reinforcing the city's and Recology's commitment to reducing waste and adopting clean energy solutions. "Recology's leadership on recycling and composting helped make San Francisco 'the greenest big city in the nation'; now we are leading the way on sustainable operations," said Salvatore M. Coniglio, CEO of Recology.

Recology's dedication to fleet sustainability is evident, having already reduced emissions from fuel use by over 77% since 2018. This latest test follows the company's earlier introduction of the nation's first electric Class 8 rear loader in Seattle in 2019, further cementing its role as a pioneer in the waste management industry.
