Virginia Was An Ocean Nearly 500 Million Years Ago

WINCHESTER, VA - Virginia, now known for its mountains, valleys, and coastlines, was once submerged beneath a vast ocean.

According to James Madison University, approximately 500 million years ago, during the early Paleozoic Era, much of what is now Virginia lay at the bottom of a shallow sea called the Iapetus Ocean.

This ancient ocean existed long before the formation of the Atlantic Ocean and played a significant role in shaping the region's geological history.

Fossils of marine creatures, including trilobites, brachiopods, and ancient corals, have been discovered in these rocks, offering a glimpse into the underwater world that once existed, according to James Madison University.
