Kirby Park’s Centennial Celebration is slated to take place from 12 to 9 p.m. Sept. 7, Wilkes-Barre City Mayor George Brown announced Monday.

The 100th anniversary of the opening of the park, which was commissioned in 1924 by businessman and philanthropist F.M. Kirby through a large donation to the city, will be marked with “Kirby Day,” a celebration not unlike the one held a century ago when the park first opened.

The event will feature food vendors, live music, face painting, petting zoo, hot air balloons, carousel and children’s rides, and a NEPA Philharmonic performance, officials said.

A fireworks display will conclude the celebration.

Mayor Brown and a representative of the Kirby Family will provide remarks at 5 p.m. at the Martz Pavilion.
