Fields Has 'Real Support' Inside Steelers - Meaning QB's Starting?!

    By Mike Fisher,

    2024-08-27

The Pittsburgh Steelers are taking their time before announcing their starting quarterback, with coach Mike Tomlin suggesting he might use this practice week to help make a final determination between Russell Wilson and Justin Fields.

    That's quite non-committal, and maybe it's smart.

Meanwhile, some members of the media, in their sound and their fury, are making "bold statements'' about the situation ... when in reality they're being non-committal, too.

Exhibit A? Fields - the Bears' 2021 first-round pick who was dumped on Pittsburgh this spring with the idea that he'd backup newly-acquired vet Wilson - "has real support in the building," according to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer .

"Real support''? What does that mean? Of course he has support.

Breer goes on to tell us, "My feeling is that Justin Fields has done enough to make this week interesting in Pittsburgh.'' "Interesting''? What does that mean? Of course it's "interesting'' - Tomlin said so out loud.

He added, "The Steelers could start Justin Fields.'' To which we add ... again ...

    Of course he could.

Pittsburgh watchers are clamoring for answers and full of opinions. Wilson, the 13th-year veteran, seems a safer bet. The athletic Fields makes some sense in part as a result of watching a Steelers preseason offense with so many breakdowns that it seems a QB with off-script running ability might be helpful.

In the preseason, Fields went 19-of-27 for 199 yards. Playing in two preseason games, Wilson was 10-of-12 for 73 yards. Neither guy truly asserted himself as the clear answer for Week 1 against the Falcons, let alone for the year.

And as the media attempts to make bold proclamations that actually say nothing? The media isn't truly asserting itself, either.
