Panthers Release WR Terrace Marshall

In a surprise move, the Carolina Panthers have released Wide Receiver Terrace Marshall Jr., who had one of the best camps and preseasons this year. A second-round NFL draft pick, Marshall has struggled through his first three seasons with injuries and multiple coaching changes throughout that time. He did manage 64 catches for 767 yards and one touchdown during that span. While Marshall has flashed in some of the recent preseasons, that skill hasn't translated into regular season consistency.

Carolina Panthers Performance Overview

Marshall's tenure with the Panthers has been anything but smooth. His formative years were injury-riddled, and the team's revolving coaching staff didn't do much to further his cause. That is, until this offseason, when Marshall seemed like a different man, putting on skill shows that had him written into the 53-man roster with little doubt. The strong showing itself raised hopes in camp that he could finally make an impact.

Despite the relatively strong showing from Marshall, the Panthers opted to release him. Head Coach Dave Canales stated that the team is considering options to beef up their receiving corps. New talent could be brought in from outside the organization. Canales emphasized that the release of Marshall was part of an overall plan to best optimize the occupancy of the roster.

The decision to release Marshall does seem puzzling considering recent improvements, but some factors such as roster balance and possible upgrades probably came into play. The Panthers are counting their needs and looking into how best to allocate roster spots for the most effective team.
