Detroit Lions keep only 52 on initial roster after wave of cuts

The Detroit Lions’ initial roster is officially set after a series of roster moves on Tuesday.

Expect some more moves in the coming days, however, as the team actually left one roster spot open and will likely make at least one more available with injured reserve movements (John Cominsky), which could allow for additions, particularly at wide receiver.

Therefore, things are still in flux ahead of the season-opener on Sept. 8 against the Los Angeles Rams. Teams will also be able to start setting their practice squads — which can hold up to 16 players (17 if one is an international player ) — on Wednesday at noon (ET). However, for now, here is the initial 53-man (52-man, really) roster for the Lions:

Quarterbacks (2)

IN: Jared Goff, Hendon Hooker

OUT: Nate Sudfeld, Jake Fromm

A bit surprising here, as head coach Dan Campbell had indicated Sudfeld was the No. 2 even after the preseason finale but he could always be a practice squad guy, which makes the most sense.

Running Backs (4)

IN: David Montgomery, Jahmyr Gibbs, Craig Reynolds, Sione Vaki

OUT: Jermar Jefferson, Zonovan Knight, Jake Funk

Wide Receivers (4)

IN: Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Kalif Raymond, Isaiah Williams

Expect the Lions to look to waivers for help here with only Isaiah Williams emerging from the wide receiver competition.
