Buccaneers' Chris Godwin Reveals 'Steep Learning Curve' For Liam Coen's Offense

This offseason, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' offensive players have been focusing on learning Liam Coen's system.

All throughout training camp, we heard words like "hard" and "complex" when players described Liam's scheme , but as we saw on the first drive against the Miami Dolphins in Tampa Bay's third preseason game when it clicks, it looks superb.

But the offense didn't just fall into being so efficient; it took months of learning to the point where they could produce as they did against Miami.

For receiver Chris Godwin, he revealed how complex the scheme is and that there was a steep learning curve this offseason.

“I would say there's a lot more plays but our responsibilities on those plays are also more as well,” Godwin said . “So the learning curve is a little bit steeper, but I think that it set so that once you get like the base of it, you're able to like interchange a bunch of pieces so it's not like we have to come up with new plays in order to get different like matchups.”

With the Buccaneers somewhat of an unknown quantity in 2024 due to having a new offensive scheme coupled with the question marks leveled at Baker Mayfield and his ability to reproduce his 2023 Pro Bowl efforts, many aren't taking Tampa Bay too seriously.

That's nothing new for the franchise, but they have some genuine weapons on both sides of the ball that can cause damage.

The offense will have a lot of moving parts, with some plays looking the same, but are actually different; Mayfield will have a lot to do at the line of scrimmage.

Again, how the offense operated against the Dolphins will surely give Coen and his players confidence ahead of Week 1 against the Washington Commanders.
