'It's A Cheat Code!' Steelers Keeanu Benton Mentored By Cam Heyward

Pittsburgh Steelers defensive lineman Keeanu Benton couldn’t have been drafted to a better situation. The defense was already very good before Pittsburgh selected the former Wisconsin Badger in the second round of last year’s draft.

He wasn’t expected to make a huge impact right away, which gave him time to get his feet wet and learn the pro game. Lucky for him, Cam Heyward took him under his wing and helped mold him last season.

Benton was asked after Monday’s practice about what Cam's mentorship has meant to him as a pro and as a person and how it’s prepared him for this year.

"I feel like it’s a cheat code,” Benton said. “I’m not coming in here doing it for the first time. I’m not going in blind. I can lean on guys like that to lead the way and ask some questions like, ‘What [do] you wish you would’ve done your rookie year?’

“It’s not mystical and I feel like he hands those details down.”

Benton will see plenty of playing time alongside Heyward this season as the Steelers look to lock down opposing offenses and give themselves a chance to break the glass ceiling and finally come through in the playoffs.

The Steelers haven’t won a playoff game in eight years, and this defense is ready to take them to the next level. Benton figures to be a big part in that.
