New York Mets Offense Explodes In Critical Victory

The New York Mets offense had a great game on Tuesday night as they defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 8-3 in the first game of their three-game set. A solo home run by First Baseman Pete Alonso got the scoring started in the top of the first inning. The offense of the New York Mets laid dormant until the top of the fifth when they put up six runs.

Third Baseman Mark Vientos, Right Fielder Jesse Winker, Outfielder Tyrone Taylor, and Second Baseman Jeff McNeil all added an RBI in the half inning as the Mets put the game out of the game of reach for the Diamondbacks. With such a great performance from his offense, Starting Pitcher Sean Manaea picked up the baton and ran with it. He surrendered three earned runs over 6.2 innings and struck out a season-high 11 batters. Will the New York Mets be able to carry this momentum into the remaining two games of this series?

New York Mets' Playoff Chances

With the win last night, New York(69-63) is three games back of the third and final National League Wild Card spot. They failed to make up any ground as the teams in front of them, the San Diego Padres and Atlanta Braves, won last night as well. The playoff chances of the New York Mets sit at only 18.7% according to FanGraphs. New York still has two games remaining in their series with the Arizona Diamondbacks, who currently sit atop the NL Wild Card race.

History Made In Victory

With Pete Alonso's solo home run in the second inning, he tied a New York Mets legend for third on the franchise's all-time home run list. With his 220th career home run Alonso tied Mike Piazza for third-most home runs in team history. Next up on the list for Alonso is David Wright with 242 round-trippers. With Alonso not under contract with the team past the 2024 regular season, he may not get the chance to pass Wright on the all-time list.

Looking Forward To Tonight's Game

The New York Mets look to recreate their offensive performance this evening when they face Eduardo Rodriguez. He has fared well this season after making his 2024 debut earlier this month following a shoulder injury. New York sends Luis Severino to the bump tonight. He has been great this season and will need to rebound from a poor start when he faced the Diamondbacks earlier this season. He surrendered four earned runs over 5.1 innings on May 31. New York has no margin of error with only 30 games remaining in the 2024 regular season.
