( NewsNation ) — The Social Security Administration is hoping to make applying for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) a whole lot easier, announcing it will start offering online, streamlined applications for some applicants as soon as December.

The SSA is looking to simplify the process by introducing the iClaim expansion, which aims to establish a fully online application. Not only would the user-tested program be easy to navigate, but it would reduce the time it takes to apply.

“Over the past year, we have asked many applicants and advocates — as well as our workforce — how we could make the SSI application process easier and simpler. Now, we are taking an important first step to do just that,” Commissioner of Social Security Martin O’Malley said.

SSI provides monthly payments to people with disabilities and older adults with little to no income.

The first launch of the iClaim expansion will only be available to first-time applicants who are between 18 and 65 years old and who have never married, the new release said. The SSA plans to expand the online application to all SSI applicants in spring 2025.
