Authorities are investigating the death of a retired Army pilot who died in a helicopter crash in rural East Texas. The pilot, identified as 51-year-old Jason Wimberly from Jackson, Mississippi, crashed in a field near Newton on August 23 at approximately 1:30 p.m., according to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).

The helicopter, which was being used for agricultural services, was approaching a fuel truck when it crashed for reasons that remain unknown. Wimberly was killed on impact. A person on the ground, standing beside the truck, was struck by the helicopter’s landing skids and was transported to a hospital with injuries.

Both the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are conducting investigations into the cause of the crash.

Wimberly’s family and friends are mourning his loss. His brother, Michael Wimberly, shared a heartfelt message on social media, remembering Jason for his warm spirit and infectious smile. “Jason never met a stranger, and his circle of friends was as vast as the skies he loved to soar,” Michael wrote in an August 26 Facebook post.

Jason Wimberly had a distinguished military career, having served as a Blackhawk helicopter pilot during a tour in Iraq after joining the Army post-college. Even after his return from overseas, his passion for flying continued as he took on a job as a crop duster.

“Jason had a deep sense of duty and adventure, but he also had a wild side,” Michael Wimberly reflected. “Sadly, that wild streak caught up with him. I am heartbroken to say that my parent’s son, my brother, and our beloved Uncle Jason won’t be coming home.”

Jason Wimberly is survived by his parents, siblings, and numerous nieces and nephews who adored him.
