Carlos Alcaraz revealed the secret weapon that strikes ‘fear’ into his opponents after winning his first-round match at the US Open. The third seed was not entirely unbeaten against Li Tu, winning four sets over the Australian 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. The secret weapon was asked openly by his compatriot, Nick Kyrgios – who is on media duty for ESPN – to the delight of the fans after the match. Kyrgios even mentioned that Alcaraz’s secret weapon was also sensational and left him in awe. What is it?

Carlos Alcaraz admitted that in some tournaments he wanted to wear his ‘weapon’ probably to put fear into the opponent. But this would not have been revealed if Nick Kyrgios had not asked to represent his curiosity and the crowd, “I love when you wear singlets out on court here. And I want to know did you design this yourself? Because your arms are looking sensational!,” he said.

Alcaraz responded laughing loudly and declared, ”I love playing sleeveless.” The 2022 US Open champion said that wearing this kind of top was a ploy to psych out his opponents. “In some tournaments, I want to play with sleeveless shirts probably to put fear into the opponents,” he continued. However, Carlos Alcaraz’s choice of style is nothing more than just to find comfort during his play at Flushing Meadows. “But here in New York it’s so hot, so humid, you try not to sweat a lot.” Alcaraz seems to have a good choice during his first-round play. He had to play for almost three hours against Li Tu.

Carlos Alcaraz is Bidding to Make Another History

Despite having wobbles on his overall result, Carlos Alcaraz could start strongly and quickly find himself a set and a breakup before the unforced errors started to creep up. He also readjusted well in the third set. He came back stronger in the fourth, finishing with 50 winners.

With this win, Carlos Alcaraz extended his winning streak to 15 straight Grand Slams. The Spaniard won the French Open and Wimbledon titles earlier this year, giving him four major championships. If he manages to add another this time, Alcaraz would join Rod Laver (1969) and Rafael Nadal (2010) as the only men to capture those three Grand Slam titles in the same calendar year during the Open era. When asked about it, Alcaraz jokes, “Well, after this interview I’m going to pretend I never heard that,” he said.

On the Right Track to Another Final Clash with Djokovic

A good start on his first day made Carlos Alcaraz get closer to his other final clash with Novak Djokovic at the US Open. Carlos Alcaraz then revealed that he had a strategy to maintain his relation with his – if you can now say – rival. He declared that there are “no friends” on the tennis tour once players take to the court to compete,

Alcaraz and Djokovic have faced off seven times in an intergenerational rivalry, with all of their encounters coming in finals or semi-finals at big tournaments. Djokovic is still leading with a 4-3 advantage after winning their most recent clash in the gold medal match at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
