Late deficit? No problem for the Hops who overcame a late Vancouver lead to defeat the visiting Canadians 9-5 in their series opener on Tuesday night, Aug. 27, at Hillsboro Ballpark.

Trailing 5-3 entering the bottom of the eighth inning, Hillsboro scored six runs thanks to five singles, a double and two home runs to overtake and ultimate defeat Vancouver.

Every Hop starter had a hit in the game, led by Gino Groover who finished 3-for-4 with two home runs, five RBI and two runs-scored.

In all, Hillsboro had 14 hits, including four — Groover, Tommy Troy, Junior Franco and Gavin Conticello — who had two or more.

Jack Hurley also homered, bringing his team-leading season total to 12.

Roman Angelo started the game on the mound for the Hops, allowing four earned runs on seven hits over 6.1 innings.

Vancouver scored two runs in the third inning and three runs in the sixth, combated by Hillsboro’s run in the second, and two in the fourth leading up to the game-deciding eighth inning.

Ryan Watson started on the mound for the Canadians and allowed three earned runs on six hits over six innings, while Vancouver’s Grayson Thurman took the loss, allowing six earned runs while retiring just one out in the eighth inning.

The two teams will meet again at 7:05 p.m. tonight, at Hillsboro Ballpark.
